Raku Firing FAQs

What makes a kiln suitable for raku?

Fast heat-up, easy access for removing glowing-hot pieces, and construction that tolerates rapid thermal cycling. That's why Olympic's TopHat design — where the whole chamber lifts off the base — works so well for raku.

Can I do raku with an electric kiln?

Yes — electric raku kilns reach temperature quickly and fire consistently, built for artists without gas access. The reduction step still happens outside the kiln in combustible material, so plan an outdoor setup either way.

What temperature is raku fired at?

Typically 1650–1800°F (around cone 06–04) — much lower than stoneware. The drama of raku comes from the rapid cooling and reduction, not high temperature.
